Why AISI 316L for Marine Chains

Why Ordinary Chains Fail at Sea

Carbon steel chain depends on its coating for protection. In a marine environment that coating gets scratched, salt water reaches the steel underneath, and corrosion starts exactly where the damage is. Galvanizing slows this down, but a coated chain still needs attention over its life. For permanent immersion, or for a chain that will not be maintained often, stainless steel removes the problem instead of postponing it.

What Makes 316L Different

What makes 316L special? Its chemical composition includes 2-3% molybdenum - an element that significantly boosts resistance to chloride-induced corrosion. Unlike 304 stainless steel, 316L stands up to seawater, acidic residues, and coastal humidity.
The 'L' stands for low carbon. A lower carbon content reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, which is why 316L is the usual choice where a chain or fitting has been welded and the joint must stay corrosion resistant. That matters on a chain, because welds are exactly where corrosion likes to start.

304 vs 316 vs 316L

All three are austenitic stainless steels, and the difference is worth understanding before you specify a marine chain. 304 is the general purpose grade and is fine indoors and for light outdoor use. 316 adds molybdenum and is the grade chosen for seawater and chloride exposure. 316L is the low-carbon version of 316, preferred where welded joints have to keep their corrosion resistance. For a chain that lives in or near salt water, 316 or 316L is the appropriate choice - not 304.

Where We Use 316L

At Boyuan Metal, we apply this material science to our DIN 766 chains, and to our stainless steel chain and wire rope range. DIN 766 is the German standard for calibrated short link chain; made in 316L it becomes a chain suited to mooring, anchoring and other permanent marine duty. Stainless versions are supplied polished.

Maintenance

A 316L chain needs very little attention. Rinse with fresh water after use to remove salt deposits, and inspect periodically for wear or damage. With that routine the chain stays in service with very little attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 316L better than 304 for a marine chain?

Yes. 304 is not normally recommended for continuous salt water exposure. 316L contains molybdenum, which gives it markedly better resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, so it is the grade to specify for marine use.

Should I choose 316 or 316L?

Both resist seawater well. 316L has the lower carbon content, which is preferred where the chain or its fittings have been welded and the joint must stay corrosion resistant. If you are unsure, tell us how the chain will be used and we will confirm.

Can 316L chain be used for lifting?

Stainless chain is available in lifting grades, but a general purpose chain such as DIN 766 is not a grade-marked lifting chain. Tell us the working load and the application so we can confirm the correct chain rather than assume one.
