Double loop chain is a weldless chain: each link is formed from a single piece of wire into two loops and interlocked with the next link, so there is no weld anywhere in the chain. That construction makes the chain flexible in every direction and resistant to kinking, which is why it is used for hanging, light pulling and general hardware work. It is supplied in two standard patterns - the USA standard and the German DIN 5686 - and the sizes and loads for both are set out below.
What Double Loop Chain Is
A double loop link is bent into two loops, and each loop passes through the loop of the neighbouring link. Because the links are formed and interlocked rather than welded, the chain has no welded joint to fail, and it can be shortened by opening a loop and removing links. The trade-off is that it is a light duty chain: it is not a grade-marked lifting chain, and the working load limits in the tables below are published figures for general hardware use, not for overhead lifting.
USA Standard Double Loop Chain
The USA standard pattern is the form most often specified in North America for hanging and general purpose work. Steel and brass versions are listed separately, each with its own working load limit and minimum breaking force. Item numbers ending in L are the long link versions of the same wire diameter.

DIN 5686 Double Loop Chain
DIN 5686 is the German standard for this chain, with sizes designated K10 to K60. The table gives the wire diameter, inside length and minimum outside width with their tolerances, together with the approximate weight per 100 metres and, where published, the actual weight per metre.

Materials and Finishes
Double loop chain is made in carbon steel, brass and stainless steel. Carbon steel is the general purpose option and is supplied electro galvanized, hot dip galvanized or zinc plated for corrosion protection. Brass is chosen where a decorative finish or better corrosion resistance is wanted in indoor work. Stainless steel is used where the chain sees moisture, cleaning agents or outdoor exposure and must not rust. Tell us the environment and the finish can be matched to it.
Where Double Loop Chain Is Used
The usual duties are hanging lamps, signs and light fittings, plant hangers, barrier and crowd control chain, key and tag chains, and light general hardware work. It also appears as a component in agricultural and industrial equipment where a flexible weldless link is wanted. It is not used for lifting, towing or any duty that calls for a rated chain.
Ordering and Packing
Order by the standard (USA or DIN 5686), the item number or wire diameter, the material and the finish. The chain is supplied in bundles, plastic drums, metal drums or reels, and cut lengths can be arranged. Tell us the size, the finish and the quantity and we will confirm the specification and the packing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is double loop chain a lifting chain?
No. Double loop chain is a weldless general purpose chain. The working load limits in the tables are published figures for general hardware use; the chain is not grade-marked lifting chain and must not be used for overhead lifting.
What is the difference between the USA standard and DIN 5686?
They are two standard patterns for the same type of chain. The USA standard uses trade item numbers such as 1/0 and 2/0 and is common in North America; DIN 5686 uses K10 to K60 designations and is common in Europe. The wire diameter, inside length and outside width differ between the two, so specify which pattern you need.
Can double loop chain be shortened?
Yes. Because the links are formed rather than welded, a loop can be opened to remove links and closed again. Do not shorten it by cutting and welding - a welded joint in a weldless chain is a weak point.
Boyuan Metal supplies double loop chain in the USA standard and DIN 5686 patterns, in carbon steel, brass and stainless steel, with the finishes and packing suited to the duty. Tell us the standard, size, material and finish you need and we will confirm the specification.
