Chain and Wire Rope for Display Work
Hanging signs, lamps and shop fit-out call for light chain and coated or stainless wire rope. Which to use where, and the safety limits of light-duty use.
A display chain has one job a load chain does not: it has to look right. Hanging signage, lamps and planters call for chain and wire rope chosen for finish, not capacity. Everything here is light duty: none of it is for lifting or load-bearing use.
Decorative Weldless Chain
The decorative range is weldless chain in low carbon steel, plated or painted. Brass plated chain gives the look of solid brass at lower cost and suits hanging lamps, signs and planters, and comes in black, antique brass and white. Decorative oval chain uses oval links where appearance matters more than capacity.
The Light Weldless Chains
Two light weldless forms do most of this work. Single jack chain has one loop per link, for hanging lamps, signs and pictures, and for light support of cable and conduit. Double loop chain has two loops per link, making it flexible and tangle-resistant; it comes to the American standard or DIN 5686.
S Hooks and Tool-Free Hanging
Hanging work is often temporary, and an S hook is a simple way to join chain or hang a light sign or planter from a bar. It needs no tools and is used with knotted, single jack and decorative chain. Note that an S hook is an open hook: it can open if side-loaded, so keep the pull straight.
When Wire Rope Is the Better Choice
Wire rope earns its place where the run is long, the line has to be taut, or the setting is outdoors. PVC coated steel wire rope comes in 6x7, 7x7 and 7x19 in carbon, alloy or stainless steel, for railings, hanging, light decorative lighting runs and guard lines; the coating protects the rope from corrosion and people from the wire.
For outdoor and architectural work, stainless steel wire rope in SUS304, AISI316 or AISI316L is the usual choice, for hanging and display and work exposed to weather or moisture. Its bright finish is why it is picked where the cable will be seen. Note that balustrade and architectural cable work is load-bearing and safety-critical, and must be engineered and installed to code by a competent installer.
Light Duty Is Not Lifting
One caution applies to everything here, chain and wire rope alike. Decorative, single jack, double loop and DIN 5686 knotted chain are light weldless chains, and the PVC coated and stainless steel wire rope is light duty too. None of it is for lifting or load-bearing suspension; this range is for signs, lamps and planters of a few kilograms. Never use it to lift. Do not hang anything heavy above people without a rated safety system: for anything suspended overhead, add secondary retention such as a safety cable. For real lifting, use chain with a recognised grade marking and rated fittings, matched to the load and sling angle. Inspect before use: a PVC coating can hide corrosion, and a worn link can open under load.
