Chain and Wire Rope for Outdoor Hanging: Hammocks and Furniture
Hammocks, porch swings and hanging furniture all ask the same of their hardware: hold a load outdoors, in the weather, for years. What to hang them with.

Hanging something outdoors is a different job from hanging it indoors. Sun, rain, salt air and constant movement work on the hardware, and whatever holds a hammock or porch swing must take a person's weight, season after season. That hardware is chosen for weather resistance, smooth movement and strength.
What Outdoor Hanging Hardware Has to Do
Three demands stand out. The finish must survive outdoors: a chain that rusts on a porch fails there. The movement has to be smooth, because a hanging seat rocks whenever used. And the load is not static: a swing carries a moving person, so the chain and fittings must hold under shifting load.
Swing Chain: Calibrated and Suited to Hangers
Swing chain is a DIN 766 calibrated short link chain supplied in sizes suited to the hanger. The calibrated links run smoothly through the hanger: an even chain keeps a hanging seat moving steadily. It is used for garden swings, play equipment, hammocks and outdoor furniture, and general outdoor hanging. For permanent outdoor use, hot dip galvanizing is the practical choice.
The Finish Decides How Long It Lasts
Outdoors, the finish does most of the work. Electro galvanizing is standard protection; hot dip galvanizing carries a thicker zinc layer and lasts longer. Where appearance matters and the setting is coastal, a stainless steel swing chain keeps its looks as well as its strength, and is better where the hanging point sees salt. Our guide to galvanized finishes covers the coatings.
Hanging Points and Fittings
The chain is only part of the assembly. The top end needs a sound anchorage - a beam or post that can carry the load, not a bracket picked for looks. The chain can be supplied as a swing set with hooks and fittings, so pieces arrive matched. A hook-on connection suits lighter hanging where a tool-free link is wanted. A PVC coated wire rope is another option for a light, non-load-bearing line.
Not a Lifting Chain
One caution matters more than usual. Swing and hanging chain is general purpose chain for hanging, not grade-marked lifting chain, and is not for overhead lifting or lifting people. The load in a hammock or swing is a person, so safety comes from a sound anchorage, fittings sized for the load, and inspection: check the chain and hanger for wear, corrosion and stretched links, and replace anything worn. Never weld or repair hanging hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
What chain is used for hammocks and porch swings?
A calibrated short link chain such as the DIN 766 swing chain, sized to the hanger it runs through. Choose a finish to suit the exposure: hot dip galvanized for permanent outdoor use, stainless where appearance and corrosion resistance matter.
How long will a galvanized swing chain last outdoors?
It depends on the finish and the exposure. Electro galvanizing gives standard protection, while hot dip galvanizing carries a thicker zinc layer and lasts longer outside. In coastal conditions, stainless steel is the usual choice.
Can hanging chain be used for lifting?
No. Swing and hanging chain is general purpose chain for hanging, not grade-marked lifting chain, and is not for overhead lifting or lifting people. Use fittings sized for the load.
Boyuan Metal supplies swing chain in electro galvanized, hot dip galvanized and stainless steel, with hooks and fittings for swing sets, plus PVC coated wire rope and S hooks for lighter hanging. Tell us what you are hanging and the load, and we will confirm the fittings.
