Weldless Chain: The Complete Guide to Non-Welded Chain Types and Applications

This guide covers the common types, materials, finishes, and typical uses of weldless chain.

weldless chain
Weldless chain is a category of chain manufactured without any welding process. Instead of welding each link closed, the chain is formed by bending or twisting wire, or by mechanically interlocking components. This makes weldless chain lighter, more economical, and ideal for a wide range of low-load, decorative, and utility applications — but it is never intended for lifting or heavy load-bearing.

What Is Weldless Chain?

Weldless chain, also called non-welded chain or open-link chain, is produced without any fusion welding. The links are shaped from wire or metal strip, then interlocked by mechanical means. This reduces production cost and allows for very small or highly decorative chains that would be difficult to weld.
Because no weld means no heat-affected zone, weldless chain is usually not rated for strength. It is intended for hanging, securing, pulling light loads, or decoration — not for lifting or heavy securing.

Common Types of Weldless Chain

Type
Description
Typical Use
Single Loop Chain
Each link is a single open loop twisted into the next link. Oval or pear-shaped.
Hanging signs, light fixtures, display chains
Double Loop Chain (Knotted Chain)
Each link is formed into a double loop or knot, with no open ends. Also referred to as DIN 5686 chain without quality requirements.
Key chains, decorative chains, light duty utility
Sash Chain
Very fine, flat or round wire chain, extremely lightweight.
Window sash cords, lamp pull chains, small utility
Jack Chain
Made from stamped metal or bent wire, flat profile links.
Light duty hanging, pet tags, electrical fixture support
Bead Chain
Small metal beads connected by short wire links.
Pull chains for switches, ID tags, keychains
Ornamental / Decorative Chain
Various shapes and finishes, including twisted, figure-eight, or diamond patterns.
Home décor, costume jewelry, retail display

Materials and Surface Finishes

Weldless chain can be produced from a range of materials, depending on the required appearance and environment:
Material
Characteristics
Low-carbon steel
Most common, cost-effective, available in various finishes
Stainless steel (304/316)
Corrosion-resistant, suitable for outdoor, marine, or food environments
Brass / Copper
Decorative appearance, often used for lighting and furniture
Aluminium
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, lower strength
Common surface finishes include:
  • Electro-galvanized — bright silver, light corrosion protection
  • Hot-dip galvanized — thicker, matte grey, better outdoor durability
  • Brass-plated — decorative golden appearance
  • Black oxide — dark, minimal reflection
  • Colour-coated / PVC-coated — coloured finishes for visibility or aesthetics

Typical Applications

Weldless chain is used across many everyday and industrial niches:
Application
Preferred Chain Type
Lighting and ceiling fans
Single loop, sash chain
Sign and display hanging
Single loop, jack chain
Key chains and pet tags
Double loop, bead chain
Pet leashes and tie-outs
Double loop or single loop (light duty only)
Window blinds and shades
Bead chain, sash chain
Curtain and drapery weights
Sash chain, jack chain
Decorative furniture and home décor
Ornamental chain
Garden and landscaping
Single loop, plastic-coated chain

Weldless Chain vs. Welded Chain

Feature
Weldless Chain
Welded Chain
Production method
Bending, twisting, or mechanical interlocking
Electric resistance or flash-butt welding
Strength
Low, not load-rated
Moderate to very high, load-rated
Heat treatment
Not applicable
Common for high grades
Intended use
Hanging, decoration, light utility
Securing, towing, lifting, industrial
Cost
Low
Higher, depending on grade
Safety
Not for lifting or heavy loads
Grade-specific for lifting or tie-down

How to Choose the Right Weldless Chain

  1. Confirm the load — weldless chain is for light loads only. If in doubt, use a welded chain.
  1. Consider the environment — indoor decorative use allows brass or electro-galvanized steel. Outdoor or wet areas require stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized.
  1. Determine the required appearance — choose from bright, matte, coloured, or coated finishes.
  1. Select the link style — single loop for hanging, double loop for key chains, bead chain for pull switches.
  1. Specify length and packaging — common retail packages include reels, poly bags, hanging cards, or bulk spools.
