Why Hot-Dip Galvanizing? Protect Your Chains for Years
hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) is the preferred finish for chains used in marine, playground, agricultural, and industrial environments.
Rust is the enemy of steel chains. Without protection, outdoor chains can corrode within months. That’s why hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) is the preferred finish for chains used in marine, playground, agricultural, and industrial environments.
What Is Hot-Dip Galvanizing?
The chain is dipped into a bath of molten zinc at about 450°C. A metallurgical bond forms, creating a thick, durable zinc‑iron alloy coating. The result is a chain that resists rust – even when scratched.
Key Benefits of HDG Chains
- Long‑term corrosion protection – Zinc corrodes sacrificially, protecting the steel underneath. HDG chains can last 10–20 years outdoors.
- Tough & abrasion‑resistant – Much thicker than electro‑plating (50–100+ µm), the coating survives dragging and contact with hard surfaces.
- Full coverage – Every link surface, including crevices and inner bearing points, is protected.
- Low maintenance & lower total cost – Higher upfront cost pays off through fewer replacements and less downtime.
HDG vs. Other Finishes
Finish | Thickness | Outdoor Life |
|---|---|---|
Hot-dip galvanized | 50–100+ µm | 10–20 years |
Electro-galvanized | 5–15 µm | 1–3 years |
Raw (uncoated) | None | Weeks to months |
Common Applications
- Marine mooring & anchor chains
- Playground swings & barriers
- Outdoor industrial tie‑downs
- Agricultural fencing & tethering
- Road signs & guardrails
